BEER SCHOOL!

Coming this fall…

Enjoy the art and science of brewing your own beer! Homebrew is fun, economical, and satisfying, and Beer School will teach you everything you need to get started with confidence.

We’ll start with a mixer Thursday night with a meet-and-greet, an informal get-together with nibbles and several beers (homebrew and commercial), presented with tasting notes. Friday and Saturday will be filled with education and hands-on brewing with Chris Miller, and Sunday will wrap up with post-fermentation activities, including hands-on bottling. You’ll leave armed with the know-how to start brewing successfully at home, two different one-gallon batches to ferment and finish yourself, a goodie bag, and a few tasty surprises as well!

Beer School includes:

  • Welcome party with tasting notes
  • 2 full days of hands-on homebrew basics with Chris Miller
  • Detailed sections on Water, Sanitation, Yeast, Hops, Malt, and Post-Fermentation activities
  • Hands-on production of three extract batches (Cream Ale, Stout, and IPA)
  • Hands-on production of one all-grain batch (TBA)
  • Post-fermentation activities, including hands-on bottling and discussion of kegging
  • 3 nights in shared guest rooms in former high school classrooms (double or triple occupancy; bring a friend or we can assign)
  • All meals and snacks
  • Two different 1-gallon batches of the beers we’ll make, in handy (and reusable) one-gallon fermentors to ferment and finish at home (folks who are flying in will get an alternate take-away)
  • A take-home goodie bag with supplies and tools
  • Plus a few surprises!

REGISTRATION

All Beer School participants must be aged 21+. Due to the particulars of Kansas alcohol law, we want to be clear that we are acting as a venue/facilitator only. You are paying for the space, and the classes/goodies/activities are free for guests. Just being clear that we are not in any way selling alcohol!

BEER SCHOOL is $485 and includes everything.  Accommodations are shared rooms in former classrooms. We also have a few private rooms available for an additional $100 (added with deposit). Due to the season and the nature of instruction, space is very limited!

Couple discount: Designed for couples or roomies, this option includes classes, accommodations & meals for two, with just one goody bag and set of take-home batches. (Save $50 per couple.)

Regular Registration: Register with a $200 pp deposit (refundable until March 3, 2014). You’ll pay your balance when you check in. Deposit is refundable (less any non-refundable PayPal fees) until March 1, 2015.

Gift Registration: Pay in full. Payment is refundable (less any non-refundable PayPal fees) until March 1, 2015; after March 1, $200 deposit (and any non-refundable PayPal fees) will be deducted from your refund.

Local Discount (no overnight accommodations): We offer a $100 pp discount for locals who can’t stay overnight (due to kids, farm chores, spousal considerations, etc.). We don’t recommend this option if you live farther than Topeka, as this classes can run late and adding a couple hours’ commute on either end can turn your day into a bit of a grind.

LOGISTICS

GETTING HERE Fly into Kansas City (MCI) or drive in from I-70 or 335 (if you’re driving, GPS can trick you into taking crazy, horrible dirt roads, so verify your route with our directions.

CHECK IN from 5-7pm  Thursday (No early birds, please!)

You can get settled in & just relax until the mixer (generous hors d’oeuvres & beer) around 8pm. The actual brewing won’t start until Friday, so if you need to arrive late or miss Thursday altogether, no kittens will die.

CHECK OUT Sunday afternoon.

Beer School covers a lot of ground, but the tone is very casual and relaxed. Brew days (Friday and Saturday) will alternate between informal classroom-type instruction and hands-on brewing of a style that highlights the current lesson. We’ll get started around 10am, break for lunch around 1ish, then resume until early evening, for a break before dinner at 8. After dinner, you can relax on your own, or gather back up.
