Saturday

Saturday we'll do most of the wet stuff so it will have plenty of time to dry. After checkin and an early lunch, we'll dive in to wet felting. You'll get an overview of the principles and make a gorgeous one of a kind felt scarf, then play at a few specialized techniques.

We'll take an hour break (with snacks) mid-afternoon, then begin nuno felting. We'll start with a small piece (save it for a small bag, patch, or pin), then move on to a more adventurous project, creating a beautiful scarf or wrap.

After dinner, knit-to-felters can felt their projects, and everyone else can relax, knit, play, or just curl up with a good book in their room.

7-9am Breakfast for overnighters
9-11am Checkin
11am Early Lunch
Noon-3pm Wet Felting Seminar
3pm Snack Break
4-7pm Nuno Felting Seminar
8pm Dinner
After Knit-to-felters felt away
Open knit or play

Sunday

Sunday morning, we'll recycle! Check out a great assortment of remade items and learn clever tricks and artful technques to make the most of your abandoned woolens. We'll make a messenger bag and experiment with exotic shibori-style dimensional felting.

After lunch, we'll cover needlefelting. Start with a monogram, then move on to a small sculptured piece (like a fruit or flower pin), then to a larger project, like a hat or bowl.

After dinner, we'll set up tables for Destash Central! Cull your stash before you leave home and bring your unwanted fiber to sell, trade, or just give away to a great new home. Afterwards, play with your new goodies, work on a project, or hit the hay if you have an early departure.

Monday

Most students will need to head out early, but you're welcome to stay later and explore the area. We can recommend local eateries, or order a box lunch from us.

5-9am Breakfast & depart
2pm Late check-out for drivers and later flights

Dye Lab Extension

If you'd like to stay on and dye up a fiber stash to spin, knit or felt, Monday and Tuesday have slots available to reserve the Dye Lab. The rate is $120/day and includes your guest room, meals, a four-hour block in the the Dye Lab (materials and equipment include pre-mixed acid dyes, microwaves, crock pots, roasters, mixing containers, towels, plastic wrap, baggies, gloves, etc.), your choice of 2# of undyed fiber, 1# undyed yarn, or a 1.5# mix, plus unlimited use of drum carders. Include a note when you register for Felt School, or email nikol at harveyville project dot com to reserve your spot. You can pay at check-in.

Sleep/Eat

Most of the guest rooms are large (average 700-900sf) former classrooms, with comfy beds, charming schoolroom details (chalkboards, maps) and tons of natural light. There are also some cozier rooms (former offices and teachers' rooms) reserved for private rooms. Bathrooms and showers are shared (the original school facilities). Bed linens and towels are provided.

Breakfast is Continental, so come early to chat and knit, or sneak back to your room with coffee and a little something if you're not a morning person. Breakfast includes coffee and tea, fruit, cold cereal, yogurt, pastries, toast, etc.

Lunch and dinner will be served buffet or family style. We can accomodate vegetarian diets--just let us know in advance.

As always, you're free to enjoy the group or fix a plate and skip out, if you'd prefer a little solitude.

FAQ

Which airport?

Kansas City, MO (airport code MCI)

Note: Several regional lines service MCI, so if you're not finding good rates, check Frontier, Southwest, Midwest, etc. They're not always listed on sites like expedia.

How far is Harveyville?

About 2 hours from Kansas City or the Kansas City International Airport, an hour from Lawrence.

If you're thinking of driving from farther way, use randmcnally.com to find your distance & travel estimates--it's the most consistent.

Can I bring a friend or spouse who's not attending the workshop?

If you request a private room ($50 additional), you may share it with a friend or spouse not enrolled in Felt School. They'll be on their own while you're in class (we can provide suggestions, or they can just relax in your room or on the grounds), but can join us for meals for $10/day.

Please request a private room and let us know you've got a guest when you register. You'll pay the extra fees at check-in.
